Ukraine attacked a base in Russia’s Saratov region. Three Russian soldiers were killed in the attack carried out early Monday morning, the country’s news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Defense.
Reuters reported that this was the second attack on the base this month.
A Ukrainian drone was shot down while approaching the Engels military air base in the Saratov region, the Russian ministry said. As a result of falling drone debris, three Russian servicemen among the technical staff at the airfield were seriously injured.’
The base, located near the city of Saratov, is about 730 km southeast of Moscow and several hundred kilometers from Ukraine’s front lines. An attack was also carried out here on December 5.
Analysts said the twin attacks dealt a major blow to Russia and raised questions about why its defenses failed, as attention turned to the use of drones in wars between neighbors.
Ukraine has never publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks on Russia, but has said such incidents are the ‘result’ of Russian aggression.
The Russian Defense Ministry said aviation equipment was not damaged, but several planes were destroyed, according to unofficial Russian and Ukrainian social media reports.
Reuters was not able to independently verify the reports.
Earlier on Monday, Saratov Region Governor Roman Busergin said civilian infrastructure facilities were not damaged in the incident.
He said, ‘There is absolutely no threat to residents… Civil infrastructure facilities were not damaged.’
