Irina Shcherbakova, co-founder of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Russian human rights organization Memorial, said there is currently no diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine. I am absolutely certain that there is no diplomatic solution to this with Putin as long as he is in government.
Sherbakova, who received an award for human rights work, said at an event in Hamburg, Germany, ‘The solution in this case is a military solution. Ultimately there will be some form of diplomatic solution to this conflict.
“And this diplomacy will only happen when Ukraine believes it has won this war and can determine its terms,” he added. The call to rush for peace was childish. He also said that the situation will not return to the way it was before the conflict started. The war in Ukraine has reversed many things that will never go back to the way they were.’
In Hamburg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz presented Scherbakova with the Marion Doynhoff Award for her work on human rights in her home country. Scholz said Shcherbakova’s efforts paved the way for a better future for Russia. Although this possibility ‘still seems impossible.’ Sherbakova’s organization Memorial will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Saturday, December 10.
