Paula Maino, mother of India’s oldest political party Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, died on Saturday at her home in Italy. Congress said in Delhi that his last rites were performed on Tuesday. President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief over his death. News from NDTV.

The Congress president went to Italy on August 23 to visit his ailing mother. His mother was 90 years old at the time of her death.

AICC General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter on Wednesday, ‘Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs Paula Maino passed away on Saturday 27th August 2022 at her home in Italy. The funeral took place yesterday (Tuesday).’

Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among other relatives who are abroad, are said to have attended the funeral. The three leaders attended an online meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Sunday. There the schedule for the election of the party president was fixed.

President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of various parties expressed their condolences to Sonia Gandhi and her family.

Prime Minister Modi tweeted, ‘Condolences to Sonia Gandhi ji on the death of her mother, Mrs. Paula Maino. May his soul rest in peace. My thoughts are with the entire family at this time of grief.’

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and other Congress leaders condoled the party chief and other family members.

The Congress on its official Twitter handle said, ‘Congress family expresses deep condolences on the tragic death of Mrs. Paula Maino, mother of Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. We pray for the departed soul and express our solidarity with the bereaved family.’
