The Select Committee of the US House of Representatives has voted in favor of filing criminal charges against former President Donald Trump. They accused Donald Trump of inciting rioters for the unprecedented attack on US Capitol Hill.
Democratic candidate Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election in the United States. But the then President Trump refused to accept the defeat by alleging fraud in this election. A joint session of Congress convened on January 6, 2021 to confirm Biden’s victory.
Incited by Trump to block Biden’s confirmation process, his radical supporters violently attacked the Congress building on Capitol Hill. At least five people including the police were killed. This select committee was formed from the House of Representatives of the lower house of the US Congress to investigate this incident. The committee investigated the incident for 18 months.
The inquiry committee met last Monday. At that time, all members voted unanimously to recommend that Trump be charged with four criminal offenses in the United States Department of Justice. These charges include obstruction of state proceedings and conspiracy to defraud the state.
Committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney accused Trump of dereliction of duty for failing to immediately stop the riots. He called Trump unfit for any office.
He also said that the person who behaved like this at that time is not fit to lead this nation again.
Meanwhile, Trump claimed in a statement that the goal of this investigation is to keep him away from the next election. He also complained that the investigation committee is being conducted with a party perspective.
