A Belgian police officer was killed in a knife attack in Brussels on Thursday, authorities said. Officials are investigating the attacker’s motive. News from AFP.

A judicial source told AFP that terrorism was suspected to be behind the attack. But investigators have yet to gather data to prove it.

An assailant stabbed two officers in the area around the city’s Gare du Nord railway station before another policeman on patrol shot the perpetrator in the leg and abdomen, local media reported.

One police officer reportedly died of a stab wound to the neck and the other officer and the offender were hospitalized.

“Our police officers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of our citizens,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Crewe wrote on Twitter. Today’s incident has proved it once again.’
