Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen has commented that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has the qualifications to become the Prime Minister of India. He said this in an interview given to the Indian news agency PTI.

When Amartya Sen was asked whether Mamata Banerjee can become the Prime Minister of the country, he said, “It is not that she does not have the power to do it. It is very clear, he has that power. But on the other hand, it is not yet established that Mamata will take the lead in ending divisive politics in India by bringing people’s frustrations against the BJP under one umbrella.’

According to Amartya Sen, the country’s regional parties will have to play an important role if the BJP is to be defeated in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. 2024 Lok Sabha polls is not a match for BJP to win. Rather, the focus is now on the results of several regional teams in the country.

Amartya Sen said that regional parties like Trinamool have to play a very important role. Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee has the credentials to be the next Prime Minister of India. But it remains to be seen how the Chief Minister of Bengal can use the public discontent against the BJP.

Recently, this economist declared himself anti-BJP. After Narendra Modi came to power in Seoul in 2014, he has repeatedly warned about the dangers of radical nationalism. He also had to face constant attacks from the BJP.

Since then, in interviews, he has emphasized the importance of regional parties to defeat the BJP. He said, “I think multiple regional parties are going to become very important in the coming days. I think DMK is an important party, Trinamool is also very important, same applies to Samajwadi Party. But I don’t know what the situation is at the moment.’
