The Kremlin has warned that if the West gives Ukraine any long-range weapons capable of hitting Russia, a dire situation will arise. News from AFP.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, ‘Potentially, it is extremely dangerous. This would mean bringing the conflict to a whole new level, which would certainly not be good from a global and pan-European security point of view.’

The warning comes on the eve of a key donor meeting as Western nations consider sending more powerful weapons to Ukraine. On Friday, the United States will gather allies at its air base in Ramstein for a new round of talks on supporting Ukraine militarily.

After speaking to Anatoly Antonov, Moscow’s ambassador to the United States, Peskov said Ukraine would retaliate if Western-supplied weapons were used to target Russia or the Crimean Peninsula.

Referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he said, ‘It should be clear to everyone – no matter what American or NATO weapons supply the Zelensky government, we will destroy it.’

“Defeating Russia is impossible,” he said in a statement released by the embassy.

He said US rhetoric on Ukraine was becoming ‘more belligerent’.

Insisting that Crimea is part of Ukraine, Antonov said Kyiv could use US weapons to defend its territory. Washington is essentially pressuring the Kyiv government to commit terrorist acts in Russia.

Separately, former President Dmitry Medvedev warned, continued Western support for Ukraine could lead to nuclear war. A nuclear power losing a conventional war could provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war. The nuclear powers have not lost major conflicts on which their fortunes depend.

Peskov said Medvedev’s comments were consistent with Russia’s nuclear doctrine.
