Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank have been ongoing this year. At least 100 Palestinians, including children, have been killed in each operation, the United Nations said in a statement.
UN Middle East Peace Process Special Coordinator Tor Wensland said in a statement on Saturday, “I am alarmed by the worsening security situation, including the escalation of armed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.”
At the time, Waynesland called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions to make room for important initiatives aimed at establishing a viable political horizon.
Israeli forces often carry out mass arrests across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem under the pretext of searching for ‘wanted’ Palestinians, sparking clashes with local residents.
Israel says its military and police operations are aimed at fighting terrorism.
According to Palestinian statistics, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded by Israeli fire in the occupied West Bank this year.
About 16 Israelis were killed at the same time, the United Nations said.
Israel illegally occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Six Day War. The Palestinians want the land back as a core part of their future state in accordance with international law.
