Indonesia has passed a law with a maximum sentence of one year for having sex before marriage. If the law goes into effect, sex outside of marriage will be banned in the predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian nation.

The law was passed by the country’s parliament on Tuesday. Apart from this, insulting the President and expressing opinions contrary to the state ideology, black magic is prohibited, demonstrations without permission should be punished.

Bambang Urianto, an Indonesian lawmaker involved in the passage of the law, was quoted by Reuters as saying that the passed law would punish Indonesian citizens as well as foreigners who have extramarital sex in the country.

The law provides that if the husband and wife have an extramarital affair with someone else, the victim can file a complaint with the police. And parents can file a complaint against the child in case of illegal sex.
