Two people were killed and four others wounded in a gun attack near a Kurdish cultural center in the French capital Paris on Friday. The news agency Reuters confirmed the attack with reference to the prosecutor’s office.

Multiple shots were fired on a street lined with small shops and cafes in the capital’s 10th arrondissement. The gunfire caused panic in the neighborhood.

“There has been a gun attack,” Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said on Twitter. Kudos to the security forces for their swift action. We are thinking of the victims and those who witnessed this incident.’

The Paris prosecutor’s office said it had opened an investigation into murder, manslaughter and extreme violence.

A 69-year-old suspect was arrested and detained in connection with the incident, the prosecutor’s office said.

However, the police did not say anything about the motive of the accused.

A witness told news agency AFP that seven to eight shots were fired. A second eyewitness told BFM TV that the suspected gunman, a white man, just kept shooting silently.
