General Asim Munir took over as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) at a ceremony held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. Through this he became the 17th army chief of the country. Dawn’s news.

Outgoing COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the baton of command to General Munir. After that he was appointed as the army chief of the country.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif last week selected General Munir to replace General Bajwa, ending days of speculation over the army chief’s appointment. According to Radio Pakistan, General Munir will be the 17th Army Chief to take command of the Pakistan Army.

Before the ceremony, both General Bajwa and General Munir laid wreaths at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Monument) at GHQ and recited Fateha.

The event, which started shortly after 10am local time, began with the GHQ Military Band performing a medley of national anthems and folk tunes.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, senior serving and retired officers, diplomats and government officials were present.
