Death toll rises to at least 53 after boat carrying migrants capsizes off Syrian coast

On Thursday, the Syrian Ministry of Health said in a statement that at least 34 people were rescued dead after the boat capsized. Besides, another 20 people who were rescued alive are being treated at Basel Hospital in Tartus.
The boat left Lebanon’s northern Minyeh region last Tuesday. There were approximately 120 to 150 people on board the boat. At present, the operation to rescue the rest is going on in adverse weather conditions.
It is said that there were people from different countries in the boat.
According to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, Lebanon has sheltered about 1.5 million Syrian refugees. In addition, there are 14,000 refugees from different countries in Lebanon.
