Rishi Sunak is the most talked about name in UK politics now. He mainly came into the discussion after the resignation of the country’s former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Who is this sage Sunak?

Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton. His father Yashbir Sunak was born in Kenya and mother Usha Sunak was born in present day Tanzania. His grandparents were born in the Punjab province of British India. His grandfather immigrated to the UK from East Africa in the 1960s with his children.

Sunak studied at Winchester College and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Lincoln College, Oxford in 2001. In 2006, he received his MBA from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar.

In 2015, Rishi Sunak was elected MP for the first time from Richmond constituency in Yorkshire. He served as Minister of State for Local Government during Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister. In 2009, he married Akshta Murthy, daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayan Murthy, and they have two children.

Sunak worked with Goldman Sachs in 2001 and 2004 and later became a partner at the hedge fund firm. Before entering politics, Rishi founded a billion pound global investment company. The company helped invest in small businesses in the UK. He also worked for the hedge fund management firm The Children’s Investment Fund Management and became a partner in the company in 2006. He joined Thelem Partners in 2010. Sunak was also a director of Catamaran Ventures, an investment firm owned by his father-in-law.

He was elected as the Conservative candidate for Richmond (Yorks) in October 2014. In the same year he headed the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) research unit at the think tank Policy Exchange.

In 2015, he became MP from the seat with a majority of 36.2 percent votes. He was a member of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from 2015-17.

Sunak was re-elected from his seat in the 2017 general election. He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Local Government from 2018 to 2019.

In 2019, he was appointed as Principal Secretary to the Treasury in the Boris Johnson government and became a member of the Privy Council. He was re-elected in the 2019 general election.

According to the Sunday Times ‘Rich List’, wife Akshta Murthy and Sunak’s combined net worth is £730 million. Of this, Akshata’s personal wealth is said to be £500 million. The couple are said to own ‘at least four properties’, including a £7m home in Kensington.
