The US has carried out airstrikes targeting infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in eastern Syria. The country has recently accepted this responsibility. Al-Jazeera news.
In a statement on Wednesday, the US military’s Central Command said President Joe Biden had ordered the operation in Syria ‘deir az jor’.
Deir az Zor is a strategic province bordering Iraq and containing oil fields.
There was no immediate comment from the Syrian government.
The Central Command said the operations were carried out as a deliberate move aimed at limiting the risk of escalation and minimizing the risk of casualties.
However, no target identification or casualty figures were given by the Central Command.
“Today’s strike was necessary to protect US personnel,” Central Command spokesman Col. Joe Buccino said in a statement. The attack was carried out in response to the August 15 attack on US forces.
In that attack, Iran-backed militias allegedly fired drones at the al-Tanf garrison used by US forces.
The Central Command at the time described the attack as ‘no casualties and no damage’.
Iran-backed militia groups and Syrian forces control the Deir Az Zor area, and Israeli warplanes have often been targeted in previous operations there.
US forces entered Syria in 2015 to support allied forces in their fight against the ISIL (ISIS) group.
