At least 13 people have died in a fire at a nightclub in the Russian city of Kostroma. This information was reported by the news agency Reuters citing officials on Saturday.

The city of Kostroma is located on the banks of the Volga River, 300 km northeast of Moscow. The population of this city is about 2 lakh 70 thousand.

The incident of fire took place in Polygon. It is a multipurpose entertainment venue that serves as a cafe, nightclub and bar.

“13 people died as a result of the fire,” the Judicial Inquiry Committee said in a statement.

According to the regional governor, the fire was extinguished at 7:30 am local time. He said that 5 people were injured.

Tas news agency quoted investigators as saying the fire may have started after a man fired a flare gun inside the house.

Investigators said they have opened a criminal case.
