At least 14 people were killed in an armed attack on a prison in the Mexican border city of Huaraz, and two more died in later armed attacks elsewhere in the city. The authorities of the country informed this information on Sunday. News from Reuters.
The Chihuahua state prosecutor said in a statement that 10 security personnel and four inmates were among those killed in the prison attack. 13 others were injured and at least 24 escaped.
It was not immediately known who carried out the attack.
The prosecutor said preliminary investigations showed that the attackers arrived at the prison in an armored vehicle around 7am local time and opened fire. Minutes earlier, authorities had reported a near-miss attack against municipal police. A chase led to the arrest of four people and the seizure of a truck.
Two more drivers were killed in another part of the city the next day after what authorities called an armed attack. The state did not mention whether these three incidents were related.
In August, 11 people were killed in a clash between members of two rival cartels at a prison. Most of the dead were civilians.
