


Nine months after the death of General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash, the Indian government has announced Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan (retd.) as the new Chief of Defense Staff. On Wednesday, the name was announced as the country’s top military officer. News from NDTV.
Lt Gen Chauhan retired as the Eastern Command Chief in May 2021. He has held several appointments and has extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
General Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defense Staff, and his wife were killed in a military helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in December. A total of 13 people were killed in the incident. Even the only immediate survivor, an Air Force Group Captain, later succumbed to severe burns.
General Rawat (63) took charge as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff in January 2020 The position was created to integrate the three services, Army, Navy and Air Force
The Chief of Defense Staff is to be the permanent chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee and the principal military advisor to the Minister of Defense in addition to providing impartial advice to the political leadership.
