This suspension bridge built during the British period on the Machu river in Morbi district of Gujarat is about 150 years old. The bridge was closed for some time for renovation. The bridge was opened on October 26.
However, the tragic accident happened on Sunday evening when the cable of the bridge snapped. 141 people lost their lives. Many others were injured. So far 177 people have been rescued. Many more are missing. The death toll is expected to rise.
Morbi Municipality officials say that the repair and renovation of the bridge was done by a local private trust. But the trust reopened the bridge without proper fitness certificate from the state government.
