A special discussion was held on Friday at the UN General Assembly meeting titled ‘Risk of Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East’. 152 countries voted in favor of Israel’s nuclear disarmament at the talks. Five countries, including the United States, voted against it. 24 countries abstained from voting.

In a preliminary vote by the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, 152 countries said Israel must dispose of all its nuclear weapons and place its nuclear sites under the International Atomic Energy Agency.

However, five countries opposed this proposal. The countries are – Canada, Israel, Micronesia, Palau and USA. Besides, 24 other countries, including members of the European Union, abstained from voting.

Egypt’s annual proposal to UNGA in New York was sponsored by the Palestinian Authority and 19 counties, including Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.
