At least 15 people were killed when a gas cylinder exploded in a residential area in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah. The news agency Reuters reported this information on Friday, citing the country’s civil defense.

In the latest update, a rescue operation lasting 17 hours has ended, Civil Defense said.

Earlier on Friday, the governor of Sulaimaniyah province, Hawal Abubakar, announced three days of mourning.

Firefighters of the Civil Defense managed to bring under control the fire that broke out in a residential area after a gas cylinder exploded on Thursday. Several houses were damaged in the fire and at least five vehicles were destroyed, police said.

At least three houses were completely destroyed after a cooking gas cylinder exploded on the roof of a house, police officials said.
